The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties is offering a free training program titled “Board Service: Understanding Your Role and Responsibilities” for staff and board members of area nonprofits. The workshop will take place on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at The Foundation, 2608 Genesee Street, Utica. Registration and continental breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m., presentation from 9 a.m. to noon.

Board members help steer nonprofit organizations toward a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical and legal governance and financial management policies. Additionally, board members must ensure that nonprofits have adequate resources to advance their mission. This workshop provides those involved in nonprofit leadership with a critical orientation to responsibilities, knowledge and skills needed to be an effective leader of their organization, as well as practical guidance for implementing the more challenging aspects of governance practices.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Governance trends in the Mohawk Valley
  • Legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Policy and monitoring functions of the board
  • Accountability and effective use of committee structures
  • Relationship between the board and chief operating officer
