The For The Love of The Game Fund made its first award to a local student. The fund was created in memory of Robert “Bob” Warwick, a dedicated coach and mentor whose kindness, resilience, and selflessness left a lasting mark on all who knew him. It honors his legacy by supporting a graduating member of Utica University’s ice hockey team who exemplifies the values and spirit that he brought to the game.

Bob attended Utica College and graduated in 1972. While a student, Bob played on the hockey team and was a proud member of the Theta Xi fraternity—a time in his life filled with close friendships and camaraderie. After graduating, Bob returned to Utica University as a coach, where he played a pivotal role in growing the hockey program.

Utica University senior John Gutt is the recipient of the fund’s first award. A native of Middletown, New Jersey, Gutt is a 2019 graduate of Saint John Vianney High School, where he was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and was a two-time All-State and All-Conference selection. He went on to play in the National Collegiate Development Conference with the Utica Jr. Comets before continuing his athletic career at Utica University. Gutt is pursuing a degree in Sports Management with a concentration in Business & Justice Studies and serves as a forward on the Utica University Men’s Ice Hockey Team.

“We couldn’t be more excited to see the For The Love of The Game Fund make its very first award, especially to John Gutt, who has given so much to this program and to the Utica University community," said Gary Heenan, head coach of the Utica University Men's Ice Hockey Team. "He’s incredibly deserving—he played a secondary role for three years but persevered and has saved his best for his last year. John has become a leader on and off the ice. He is first to the rink every day, his teammates love him, and I know if Bob were still here, he would pick John for what this award truly represents."

Bob's legacy lives on in “the love of the game” at Utica University, and as his fund of the same name continues to grow, an award will be made annually to a senior on the Utica University ice hockey team who embodies Bob’s spirit, dedication, and passion for the sport.
