Alex Kogut Memorial Fund Grant to CNY Veterans Outreach Center

The Alexandra G. Kogut Memorial Fund was created by Becky and Mark Kogut in honor of their daughter, Alexandra, to support community organizations that share her kindness and passions. Each year, several grants are awarded through this donor-advised fund of The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, allowing Alexandra’s spirit to live on. Funds are raised through annual events, such as the Alexandra Kogut Memorial 5K and the Alex G. Kogut Golf Tournament, as well community donations.

The Central New York Veteran’s Outreach Center in Utica was selected as one of this year’s grant recipients to help replace a critical appliance. As a one-stop facility for veterans in the community, it assists hundreds of veterans each year through its food pantry, donation room and other offerings. The Outreach Center also offers veterans without a home or access to laundry facilities a washing machine and dryer. When the washer broke earlier this year, the Outreach Center lacked the funds to replace the appliance. Morehouse Appliances generously provided a Speed Queen top-loading washing machine at a significantly reduced price, with a grant from the Alexandra G. Kogut Memorial Fund supplementing the remainder of the cost.

“Alex was very aware of the sacrifices made by service men and women, and their families. This small gesture is just a small way we could say thank you,” said Becky Kogut.

In addition to the CNY Veteran’s Outreach Center grant, the following organizations were also awarded grants:

  • The Root Farm – therapeutic horseback riding program scholarships
  • Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare – swim equipment for youth aquatics programs
  • Thea Bowman House – books and supplies for the children’s literacy Reading Rockets Soaring Summer Program
  • Town of Inlet – safety equipment and support for Arrowhead Beach
  • Utica Dollars for Scholars – a scholarship to a graduating senior in Oneida or Herkimer counties

The grants were awarded to programs that reflected Alexandra’s passions, including swimming and her love of children. As a strong swimmer, she taught lessons to local children and also worked as a lifeguard.
