Latest grants up total awarded to nearly $200,000

A community-wide fund is helping address the needs of those affected by the global pandemic by supporting area nonprofit organizations large and small.

The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties and the United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area (VGU) announced the creation of the Mohawk Valley COVID-19 Response Fund on March 20 and announced an initial round of grants this week. As nonprofit organizations continue to evaluate community needs and apply for funding, a review committee is approving grants as quickly as possible.

The latest grants approved will fund additional TeleHealth equipment for Hospice and Palliative Care and ICAN; a washer and dryer for Emmaus House, a shelter for women and children who are homeless; and COVID-19 awareness outreach to refugees that will be provided by The Center. Added to previously announced grants for Johnson Park Center, Little Falls Hospital, Mohawk Valley Health System, and Rome Memorial Hospital, the latest grants bring to nearly $200,000 the funding awarded so far.

Major contributions from M&T Bank/Partners Trust Bank Charitable Fund, the Rising Phoenix Fund, the Ronald and Sheila Cuccaro Family Fund, Mele Family Fund, David and Janet Griffith Family Fund, Bull Family Fund, The Community Foundation and United Way VGU established the fund initially. Generous donations from residents in both counties continue to grow the fund, as the need for community support is expected to increase.
