Overview
Our older communities and rural areas have harbored a silent menace for decades: lead in old painted houses and apartment buildings, inside and out. Lead poisoning can have lifelong effects, so we committed more than $6 million to launch and sustain the Lead-Free Mohawk Valley coalition. Our coalition partners, led by the HomeOwnershipCenter, are making progress. And from an initial focus on lead, the effort now embraces healthier housing for all.

In 2016, The Community Foundation partnered with more than two dozen organizations to launch the Lead-Free Mohawk Valley (LFMV) coalition. The investment over the next decade will focus on the reduction of lead hazards and expand testing and community awareness of the problem.
