Fort Schuyler Club Historic Preservation Fund
The Fort Schuyler Club Historic Preservation Fund supports the preservation and maintenance of the historic exterior of the Fort Schuyler Club building at 254 Genesee Street in downtown Utica. Founded in 1883 and housed in a building originally constructed in 1830, the Fort Schuyler Club remains one of Genesee Street’s enduring architectural landmarks. Contributions help protect the building’s exterior character, historic integrity, and presence in the downtown corridor for future generations.
Overview
Founded in 1883, the Fort Schuyler Club has been a fixture of downtown Utica’s civic and social life for more than 140 years. The club is housed at 254 Genesee Street in a building originally constructed in 1830 by canal contractor Samuel Farwell and later adapted into a private clubhouse. Recognized as a rare and well-preserved example of a historic social club building, it remains a prominent landmark on Genesee Street. In 2004, the Fort Schuyler Club was added to both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
The Fort Schuyler Club Historic Preservation Fund supports the preservation and maintenance of the building’s exterior—including masonry, façade materials, windows, trim, entrances, roofline elements, and other historic features—helping to protect its architectural integrity, preserve its contribution to the character of downtown Utica, and ensure this important piece of the city’s heritage endures for future generations. Because the fund is dedicated specifically to the outside of the building, contributions directly support the long-term care of the club’s historic exterior, not general club operations, programming, dining, events, or interior improvements.
Contributions to this fund are tax-deductible. To make a gift by check, please make checks payable to the Fort Schuyler Club Historic Preservation Fund, mailed to the Community Foundation, 2608 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13502.
