A new fund at the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties is supporting youth advocacy and youth mental health services, honoring the memory of one of the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center’s most influential contributors.

The Debbie’s Kids Memorial Fund was established by Kari Procopio and Daniel Reuben in memory of their mother, Debra Reuben Deronda, who passed away on Mother’s Day 2017. Debra served for years as a senior case manager for the Oneida County Sexual Abuse Task Force, where her expertise in investigations, joint interviewing with law enforcement, court testimonies, and legislative advocacy led to the safe placement of countless children. She later moved to North Carolina where she worked as a social worker in child protective services and in adoptions for nearly a decade.

“Our mother was dedicated to helping children find safety, health and happiness,” said Kari Procopio. “She had a caring heart and engaging presence that touched and transformed the lives of so many. We wanted to honor her memory and continue her legacy of youth advocacy through the creation of this fund, which will help local organizations in their mission to provide a bright future for all children. The Community Foundation is a vital part of the growth and sustainability of the Mohawk Valley, and we are thrilled to partner with them in this endeavor.”
