Community Foundation Awards Nearly $1.5 Million to Nonprofits, Opens Six New Funds

The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties announced awards totaling more than $703,000 to 18 nonprofit organizations through its competitive grants process for the second quarter of 2018. Competitive grants are awarded to area nonprofits primarily in support of The Community Foundation’s strategic investment areas of education, economic development, health and wellness, and arts and culture.

The following organizations were awarded competitive grants:

    • Abraham House – A $50,000 challenge grant for startup funding to support a new Rome facility.
    • Arc Herkimer – A $25,000 grant to support a partnership with Good People Energy and Herkimer Industries to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
    • Boilermaker Road Race – A $10,000 grant to fund the Boilermaker Kids in Training after school program.
    • Boonville Youth Athletic Association – A $10,000 grant for a new playground.
    • Catholic Charities of Herkimer County – A $76,516 grant to provide start-up funding for the Herkimer County Suicide Prevention Program.
    • City of Oneida Housing Authority – A $215,000 startup grant to fund a senior community center in Verona.
    • City of Utica – A $50,000 grant for the purchase of a new scoreboard for the Sal Longo multi-purpose field located at Thomas R. Proctor Park.
    • Clayville Library Association – A $2,687 grant for window replacements.
    • Frankfort Hill Historical Society – A $2,500 grant for repairs to the Frankfort Hill Historical Society’s restroom facilities.
    • Grace Church – A $3,135 grant for gymnasium lighting and flooring upgrades.
    • Handshake.City – A $25,000 grant for the urban revitalization project to create a recycled container marketplace and park in downtown Utica.
    • Herkimer County – A $15,000 grant to support a shared services project.
    • Little Falls Public Library – A $1,250 grant for the Yoga for Teens program.
    • Oneida County History Center – A $889 grant to purchase genealogy archival supplies.
    • Plymouth Bethesda United Church of Christ – A $76,898 grant for roof repairs to the space occupied by nonprofit organizations.
    • Project Fibonacci STEAM Conference – A $40,000 grant to support Project Fibonacci’s summer STEAM program for high school students.
    • Utica Center for Development – A $75,000 grant to replace the center’s HVAC system.
    • Utica Monday Nite Corporation – A $25,000 grant to support the Levitt AMP concert series and Oneida Square placemaking activities.

In addition to competitive grants, The Community Foundation’s donor-advised funds awarded 62 grants totaling more than $777,000 to 54 organizations, including:

Grants are made possible through the generosity of donors and organizations that create funds at The Community Foundation. The following new funds were created to benefit residents of Herkimer and Oneida counties for years to come:

Animal Alliance Greater Syracuse Charitable Fund – A supporting agency fund created to help benefit the Animal Alliance of Greater Syracuse, a nonprofit organization that works to create safer homes for animals.
Handshake.City Fund – A fiscal sponsorship of Handshake.City, an urban revitalization project to create a recycled container marketplace and park in downtown Utica.
Humane Society of Rome Campaign Fund and Humane Society of Rome Investment Fund – Agency funds established by the Humane Society of Rome to support capital projects and operational needs in support of its mission to promote adoption and provide care to neglected animals.
Rust2Green Utica Fund – A fiscal sponsorship of the Rust2Green Utica project which works to address community needs by creating solutions related to the economic development of New York’s rust belt cities.
Utica Pythian Foundation Fund – A donor-advised fund created by the Utica Pythian Foundation for general charitable purposes.
