Grant allows Utica Library to avoid disaster

The Community Foundation recently invested $125,000 to restore the Utica Public Library’s deteriorating gutters and make repairs to its roof.

The grant came from the following Foundation funds:

Rosamond G. Childs Fund, Watson Lowery Memorial Fund, Sinnott-Sheldon Fund and the Sinnott Family Fund, the Mele Fund.  These grants have funded the Library’s gutter and roof renovation project.

This funding allowed for the following:

  • Removal of the existing “Yankee” gutter waterproofing system and replacement with a reinforced seamless liquid applied PVC membrane system
  • Replacement of the deteriorated gutter trim with one that matches the profile of the existing trim that is part of the original roof.
  • Replacement of the open joints between the cornice limestone to make them water-tight.

The new gutters will protect the library from water infiltration which would have destroyed materials and compromise the integrity of the building.
