Foundation support helps bring nationwide farm to school initiative to Waterville, NY

The Foundation recently funded a partnership designed to feed local students food grown by their neighborhood farmers in school lunches.

The investment allows Waterville Central School District and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County to launch the area’s first Farm to School PILOT program. The program will follow a newer nationwide initiative to provide students healthier food options as well as a connection with their farming community.

The first two years of the program will focus on planning the details of how this connection will work, specifically:

  • Identifying what local food will be included in Waterville’s lunch program.
  • Incorporating education and outreach with the food program itself.
  • Eventually expanding the program to other districts in the area.

A mutual positive impact on farmer and school is expected, including increasing business to local farmers and providing students with access to and education about foods grown in their “backyards.”
