Foundation funds study that looks at Utica, NY’s refugee relationship

The Community Foundation invested $50,000 into an important project that allowed The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees to fund a study showing Utica-area residents’ perceptions of refugees and immigrants in their community. A detailed look at the report and its potential impact on our community is at uticaod.com.

Among the findings, according to uticaod.com:

  • The refugee center, though not the sole organization that caters to immigrants and refugees, is prominent in the community as the main resource for those populations.
  • The area’s history of older immigrant groups provide the base for a welcome mat.
  • Though the center has relationships with several area agencies, communication could be better.
  • Education about what benefits new populations receive when they arrive could quash urban legends.
